Trailing 21-18 at the half, the Belmont Abbey women's basketball
team outscored Saint Andrews Presbyterian 40-22 in the second half
as the Crusaders earned their tenth win in the last 12 tries with a
58-43 win this evening at the Wheeler Center. The Abbey moves to
14-8 overall and 12-5 in Conference Carolinas, while the Lady
Knights drop to 2-17 overall and 1-15 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey shot 40 percent for the game and 50 percent in the
second half as Shayla Jackson led all scorers with 18 points on
nine of 11 shooting with seven rebounds, one assist, one blocked
shot and a steal in 23 minutes. Paula Regalado added 13 points and
nine rebounds with three assists and a steal.
Saint Andrews was led by Essence Chism's 13 points and 11
rebounds, while Megan Lee added ten. The Lady Knights shot 31
percent from the field.
Saint Andrews led for the majority of the first half, as its
lead grew to as high as eight points on two occasions, but the
Crusaders closed the half on a 9-4 run to trim the Saint Andrews
lead to 21-18 at the half.
The Abbey scored the first six points of the second half to
claim its first lead of the contest since the opening minutes of
the game. The advantage grew to as high as five points at 33-28
before six straight Saint Andrews points gave it a 34-33 edge with
10:01 remaining, but a Jackson layup 43 seconds later allowed the
Crusaders to regain the lead for good. Her basket ignited an 11-0
Abbey jaunt that stretched the cushion to ten points at 44-34 with
5:25 left.
After two Lady Knights free throws pulled Saint Andrews to
within eight points, the Abbey closed the game on a 14-7 run that
provided the winning margin.
