The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team scored the first 18
points of the contest, holding Coker without a field goal for
nearly the opening ten minutes of the contest, as the Crusaders
enjoyed its highest margin of victory of the season with an 85-53
win at Coker this evening. The Abbey, winners of five-straight,
improve to 11-7 overall and 9-4 in Conference Carolinas, while
Coker falls to 2-16 overall and 1-12 in Conference Carolinas.
Junior forward Shayla Jackson led four Crusaders in double
figures with 18 points on five of seven shooting from the field, to
go along with nine rebounds and three assists. Senior guard Ashley
Giddens added 13 points on five of eight shooting with five
assists. Freshman Alyx Ingram posted a career-high 12 points on
five of eight shooting with three rebounds and a steal. Senior
guard Courtney Naquin chipped in with 11 points as the Abbey
shot 62 percent (25-40) and held Coker to 38 percent while forcing
21 turnovers.
Coker was led by Kiesha Beavers's game-high 19 points, while
Jasmine Alston finished with 18.
The Abbey opened the game on a tear, scoring the first 18 points
of the game just 7:47 into the contest. In the run, Coker missed
its first six shots and committed four turnovers. Alston broke the
drought with two free throws at the 12:44 mark, followed by two
more Beavers. Beavers gave the Lady Cobras its first field goal at
the 10:45 mark, ending a six-miss streak.
Leading 20-6, the Abbey closed the half on a 23-11 run to claim
a 43-18 halftime lead. Belmont Abbey shot 73 percent from the
floor (115-15) and held Coker to a 22 percent (5-23) effort.
Belmont Abbey extended its lead in the second half as it scored
the first eight points of the stanza. The lead grew to as high as
38 points at 83-45 with 3:03 left as the Abbey earned its
fifth-straight win and gained a season sweep of the Cobras.
