Trailing 37-30 at the half, the Belmont Abbey men's basketball
team outscored Coker 32-22 in the second half as the Crusaders
extended their winning streak to five with a 62-59 win this evening
in Hartsville. Belmont Abbey, which gained as season sweep of the
Cobras, moves to 11-7 overall and 7-5 in Conference Carolinas,
while Coker falls to 8-10 overall and 5-7 in Conference
Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey shot 48 percent from the field as sophomore
forward Kyle Phillips led three Crusaders in double figures with 17
points on eight of 13 shooting from the floor. He also had a
game-high six rebounds and two steals. Junior guard Richard Barbee
added 12 points, ten in the second half, on two of seven shooting
with four assists. He sank all eight of his free throw attempts.
Freshman guard Terrone Sheffey posted a career-high ten points on a
perfect shooting effort, finishing three for three from the field
and and converting both of his free throws. He added three assists
and three steals.
Coker shot 55 percent as Vatrick Thompson led all scorers with
19 points, while Thomas Wright added 16.
