The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team, wearing its pink
jerseys in honor of Think Pink week, had five players reach double
figures as it upset the league-leading Mount Olive Lady Trojans
75-56 this evening on their home court. The Abbey, which avenged an
earlier loss to Mount Olive, extends its winning streak to four as
it improves to 17-7 overall and pulls within one game of Mount
Olive with a 15-4 Conference Carolinas mark, while the Lady Trojans
slip to 20-4 overall and 16-3 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey shot 47 percent (22-47) from the floor and 50
percent (7-14) from three point range as Courtney Naquin led five
players, and all scorers, in double figures with 14 points, three
assists and a steal. Sophomore forward Shayla Jackson posted a
double double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. She also had six
assists, a career-high five blocked shots and a steal, all in 29
minutes. Asha Hardaway and Ashley Giddens both finished with 12
points as Hardaway sank four of her eight field goal attempts with
six rebounds and two assists. Giddens added 12 points, five assists
and three steals, as she converted four of her nine field goal
attempts. Kelsey Daniel added her second-straight ten point game,
converting three of five field goal attempts, including her only
three-point attempt, while registering a pair of steals.
The Abbey built a 20-point lead at the half, 39-19 behind a 46
percent shooting effort and holding Mount Olive to a 27 percent
outing. The Lady Crusaders would shoot 48 percent in the final 20
minutes and held Mount Olive to a 43 percent effort. The Abbey held
a commanding 48-37 edge on the boards and forced 16 turnovers.
Mount Olive was led by Jasmine Whitby and Shequanta McGee, who
both finished with 12 points. They were the only Lady Trojans to
reach double figures as they shot 36 percent (20-56) for the
game.
