On a day when the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team wore
pink jerseys as part of the WBCA Think Pink Week, the Lady
Crusaders defeated the visiting Erskine College Flying Fleet 91-72
this afternoon at the Wheeler Center. The Abbey, winners of
three-straight and four of its last five, improves to 16-7 overall
and 14-4 in Conference Carolinas, while Erskine dips to 14-9
overall and 10-8 in Conference Carolinas.
Belmont Abbey, which never trailed and led by as many as 21
points, shot 51.4 percent (37-72) from the floor as Shayla Jackson
led four Lady Crusaders in double figures with 20 points on 10-17
shooting. She also had five rebounds, two assists, a blocked shot
and a steal. Ashley Giddens added 19 points on seven of 12
shooting, with five assists and four steals. Kala Nwachukwu and
Asha Hardaway both finished with 12 points, as Nwuachukwu sank six
of her 10 field goal attempts, and Hardaway posted a double double
with 12 points and 12 rebounds, while dishing out four assists.
Courtney Naquin totaled nine points and a game-high seven assists,
while blocking two shots and recording a steal. 28 of the Abbey's
37 baskets were assisted, and the Lady Crusaders held a 45-34 edge
on the boards.
Erskine was led by Porsha Morgan's 19 points on seven of 13
shooting, while dishing out six assists and collecting a pair of
steals. Audrey Timmerman added 14 points and Elizabeth Tatum added
ten as the Flying Fleet shot 40.9 percent (27-66) from the
floor.
