One game after setting her career-high with 11 assists in the
win at Converse, Belmont Abbey junior guard Courtney Naquin posted
a career-high 28 points as the Abbey women's basketball team
defeated visiting Lees-McRae 89-71 this evening at the Wheeler
Center. Belmont Abbey improves to 15-7 overall and 13-4 in
Conference Carolinas, while the Lady Bobcats dip to 7-15 overall
and 5-12 in Conference Carolinas.
Along with Naquin, who had eight points at halftime and led the
Lady Crusader 56 point surge in the final 20 minutes with 20 points
in the half, junior guard Kelsey Daniel posted her first career
double double with 12 points and ten rebounds. She sank five of her
six field goal attempts and posted ten rebounds, six defensive, to
go along with three assists and a steal in 23 minutes. Naquin sank
nine of her 16 field goal attempts and all five of her free throws
while collecting four steals and three assists in 37 minutes. Kala
Nwachukwu posted 11 points in just ten minutes, while sophomore
forward Shayla Jackson totaled 20 points and seven rebounds as the
Lady Crusaders dominated the boards by a 44-24 count. Belmont Abbey
shot 51.6 percent (32-62) in the contest, including a blistering
56.3 percent (18-32) in the second half as it outscored Lees-McRae
56-40 in the period.
Lees-McRae was led by Lauren Casey's 22 points and eight
rebounds. She had 16 points and eight rebounds in the first half,
but collected her fourth foul early in the second half. Ashley
Holland added 11 points and Erin Thompson had ten. The Lady Bobcats
shot 41.1 percent (23-56) in the contest and 42.4 percent (14-33)
from three-point range.
