Belmont Abbey shot 52.4 percent from the floor as sophomore
guard Richard Barbee led four Crusaders in double figures with 21
points as the men's basketball team extended its winning streak to
four with an 88-68 win over visiting Lees-McRae this evening at the
Wheeler Center. The Abbey improves to 15-7 overall and 11-4 in
Conference Carolinas, while the Bobcats fall to 2-24 overall and
2-14 in Conference Carolinas.
Barbee posted 21 points on eight of 11 shooting from the field,
including a five for five effort from three-point range, to go
along with four assists and four steals in just 22 minutes.
Freshman forward Kyle Phillips added 13 points in 13 minutes,
converting five of six field goal attempts, while pulling down four
rebounds, blocking one shot and collecting one steal. Kashif Gumbs
came off the bench to post 12 points on four of eight shooting from
the floor, while adding two assists and one steal in 19 minutes.
Alex Pledger added 11 points and a game-high eight rebounds as the
Crusaders held a 34-31 advantage on the boards, while the defense
forced 24 turnovers as Barbee's four steals tied for the game-high.
The Abbey sank 33 of its 63 field goal attempts, and was a
blistering 55 percent (11-20) from three-point range.
Lees-McRae was led by Kyle Boardman's game-high 24 points, while
Sam Youse added 17 as the Bobcats shot 44.1 percent (26-59) from
the field and 50 percent (10-20) from three-point range.
