The Belmont Abbey baseball team fell to visiting St. Andrews 7-4
this afternoon in the final game of a three-game Conference
Carolinas baseball series. St. Andrews avoided the three-game sweep
as it improves to 13-26 overall and 6-15 in Conference Carolinas,
while the Crusaders fall to 26-14 overall and 13-5 in Conference
Carolinas.
Travis Lee earned the win after piecing together a 148 pitch
complete game, as he allowed four runs on eight hits while walking
five. He did not record a strikeout. Tyler Powell took the loss
after giving up seven runs, five earned, on 11 hits in five and
two-thirds innings. He fanned two and did not issue a walk.
The Crusaders jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first as
Will Breslin doubled home Tyler McKenzie, who drew a one out walk.
The Knights tied it right back up in the top of the second on a
single to right by Vincent Giunta, scoring Eric Stone.
The score remained tied at one until the Knights plated a pair
in the top of the fourth to claim a 3-1 lead, but the Abbey
answered with three in the fifth, using an RBI single by Breslin,
an RBI fielder's choice by Seth Waller and a double to right field
by Carlos Vasquez to give the Crusaders a 4-3 lead.
St. Andrews answered right back with four in the sixth inning,
all coming with two outs. The Knights took advantage of two Abbey
errors in the frame as Giunta ripped a two-RBI single to center,
and an RBI double by Jeremy Fisher, and later getting the final run
on a passed ball for a 7-4 lead, which was the final score.
The Knights finished with 13 hits as Giunta finished 4-4 with
four runs batted in. The Crusaders had eight hits as Breslin,
Vasquez, and Derek Swilley all led the way with two hits
apiece.
