No. 17 Abbey Baseball Completes Sweep of Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team completed its fifth three-game sweep of the season in Conference Carolinas play as the Crusaders swept Southern Wesleyan in a doubleheader Saturday at Dr. C Keith Connor Field.

The Crusaders broke through in the opener with a 15-4 win over the Warriors and followed that up with a 14-2 win in the series finale.

Joe Whitaker led the way offensively with five hits over the course of the day while Spencer Cipro and Sawyer Osborne each recorded wins on the mound.

With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey improves to 31-9 overall and 22-5 n Conference Carolinas play. Southern Wesleyan is 15-28 and 8-19 in conference play.

GAME 1
  • After Southern Wesleyan got on the board to start in the first inning, the Crusaders took an early lead in the second with a four-run frame.
  • Jack Boyles drove in the first run with a single while Matthew Fattore drove in two runs with a single of his own.
  • Fattore later scored on an error by the Warriors.
  • Belmont Abbey made it 5-1 with a solo home run from Michael Fattore in the third.
  • The Warriors rallied to get within a run after 5-4 in the fourth inning.
  • Cipro pitched five innings and struck out two and did not allow a walk.
  • Belmont Abbey broke the game open with a 10-run seventh inning highlighted by a two-run double from Josh Wilson a two-run single from Todd Velotta. The Crusaders sent 15 batters to the plate in the frame.
  • Wyatt Clarke came in relief on the mound and pitched a pair of scoreless innings to earn his third save of the season.

GAME 2
  • The Crusaders picked up where they left off and scored in all nine innings.
  • Belmont Abbey got going with a sacrifice fly from Jacob Steinberg and an RBI single from Michael Fattore.
  • After SWU added a run in the first inning, Fattore added another RBI single in the second inning to go with a two-run double from Caleb Burr.
  • Whitaker drove in two of the next three runs with an RBI double and his team-leading 17th home run of the season.
  • Osborne earned his second win of the year by pitching 5.1 innings and allowing just two runs on four hits and striking out three.
  • Christian Walker and Seth Moon each drove in their first runs of the season in the ninth inning.
  • Ethan Yarbrough and MJ Doan combined to allow just two hits over the final 3.2 innings to close out the sweep.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey hosts its final week of home games starting with a contest against Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday in a key Southeast regional matchup.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. at Abbey Yard.
