Belmont Abbey sophomore guard Richard Barbee led all scorers
with 15 points, one of three Crusaders in double figures, as the
men's basketball team earned a 60-42 win over Brevard College this
afternoon at Time Warner Cable Arena, home of the NBA's Charlotte
Bobcats. The game was played prior to the Bobcats-Boston Celtics
matchup. The 42 points allowed are the fewest the Abbey has allowed
in over four years as it improves to 4-0, while the Tornados suffer
their first defeat, falling to 3-1.
Neither team shot very well in the 17,000 seat arena, in which
all of the spectators were on the lower level opposite the benches.
The Abbey shot 35.9 percent (23-64) from the floor, but registered
a 7-18 outing from three point range (38.9 percent). Brevard shot
30.6 percent (15-49) from the field and sank just two of 15
three-point attempts (13.3 percent). The Tornados did hold a 43-39
rebounding advantage in the contest.
Barbee finished with 15 points 6-13 shooting, including a 2-4
effort from three-point range. He also had seven rebounds and
three steals in 33 minutes. Junior forward Chad Patus recorded a
double double with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while junior Chris
McDowell added ten points and five rebounds.
Brevard was led by Jonathan Whittson's 13 points, the only
Tornado in double figures. He also posted seven rebounds to tie for
the team lead, joining Sam Carlisle.
Belmont Abbey never trailed and led by as many as 22 points in
the contest. It took a 28-19 halftime lead thanks to a buzzer
beating three-pointer by Barbee, and dominated the second half by
shooting 41 percent from the field as it outscored Brevard 32-23 in
the half.
After the game, Boston Celtics assistant coach Kevin
Eastman addressed the team for several minutes in the locker room.
Eastman was Belmont Abbey's Athletic Director and Men's Basketball
Coach from 1986-89.
