BELMONT, NC - Pfeiffer University midfielder Maria Reis scored
the only goal of the match, as she banged a shot off the crossbar,
coming down behind the goal line, as the Lady Falcons defeated the
Belmont Abbey women's soccer team 1-0 this afternoon at Alumni
Field. Pfeiffer improves to 5-2-0 overall and 2-0-0 in the CVAC,
while the Abbey falls to 4-3-0 and 1-1-0 in the CVAC.
After a scoreless first half in which the two teams combined to
take four shots, Reis gave the Falcons the only goal it would need
at the 69:54 mark. Reis collected the ball deep in the Abbey zone
and fired a shot from 25 yards out. The shot was deflected off of
an Abbey defender and onto the crossbar, and it caromed down.
Abbey goalkeeper Anna Wells made the save, but the linesman
ruled that the ball came straight down and spun backwards, crossing
the goal line in mid-air, and thus awarding the goal.
That would be all the Falcons would need, as the Abbey mounted
several scoring chances but could not put a shot in the net. Wells
made four saves while her counterpart Jennifer Lindow collected
two. Pfeiffer outshot the Crusaders 9-3, but the Abbey held a 4-3
advantage in corner kicks.
Belmont Abbey will be back in action Wednesday when it goes on
the road to face St. Andrews. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m.
