WINGATE, N.C. — Isabella Hite scored her first goal of the season as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team concluded the opening weekend of the season with a contest against IUP Saturday evening at Wingate's Graham Gill Field.
The Crusaders fought valiantly but it was the Crimson Hawks who came away with the 3-1 victory.
Belmont Abbey is 0-2 following the opening weekend while IUP is 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Annmarie Mullen got her first start of the season in goal for the Crusaders. She made five of her seven saves in the first half.
- The Crusaders fought hard to keep the Crimson Hawks in check as they only trailed 1-0 despite being outshot 10-2 in the first half.
- Grace Hudson made a key defensive save in the second quarter to keep it 1-0.
- IUP added a second goal with under five minutes left in the third quarter to make it 2-0.
- Belmont Abbey got on the board with 33 seconds left in the third quarter as Hite scored on an assist from Sophia Coleman.
- Hite and Valerie de Bruin recorded three shots each for the Crusaders. IUP capped the scoring with another goal in the fourth quarter.
- Belmont Abbey had four penalty corners, all coming after halftime. The Crusaders also had 10 shots in the game, seven on goal.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey heads on the road to face No. 3 Newberry in the SAC opener.
- The contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start Tuesday at Setzler Field.
