BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team picked up its first win of the season as the Crusaders defeated Newberry 1-0 in the home opener Saturday evening at Alumni Field.
An early goal from Ömer Gülmez proved to be the difference while
Jackson Bennett made four saves in goal as he recorded his first career shutout.
Belmont Abbey is now 1-0-1 on the season while Newberry is 0-1 following its season opener.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey capitalized early in the seventh minute as Gülmez scored off assists from Zac Birch and Luca Pereira.
- The Crusaders took eight shots in the first half compared to seven for Newberry.
- All four of Bennett's saves came in the second half, including one in the final minute to help preserve the win for the Crusaders.
- Belmont Abbey had 15 shots, five on goal compared to 16 shots and four on goal for Newberry.
- The Crusaders had five corner kicks in the match.
- A total of 11 different Crusaders recorded a shot in the match.
