Abbey Baseball Drops Opener of Southeast Regional Against Catawba

SALISBURY, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team opened up its run at the NCAA Southeast Regional against No. 2 seed Catawba Thursday afternoon at Newman Park.

The Crusaders battled but could not overcome an early deficit as the Crusaders fell 10-3 to the Indians. Drew Stegura took his first loss of the season on the mound while Colt Wilkins took the win for Catawba.

Belmont Abbey is now 38-15 on the season while Catawba is now 43-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Matthew Fattore reached his first two times at bat with a pair of singles. He led the Abbey with two hits.
  • The Crusaders had two runners on in the top of the first inning but were unable to bring them across.
  • Catawba took advantage of four Belmont Abbey walks issued in the first inning and put up four runs.
  • The Indians added four more runs in the second inning to take an 8-0 advantage.
  • Ethan Yarbrough entered the game in relief for Belmont Abbey and settled things down with scoreless innings in the third and fourth innings.
  • He pitched a season high 3.2 innings and allowed one run and four hits and had one strikeout.
  • Jacob Steinberg and Michael Fattore added singles in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
  • Catawba added another run in the fifth inning on an RBI single from Logan Dyer.
  • Belmont Abbey finally broke through in the sixth inning with a three-run frame.
  • Jake Bidoglio got the scoring started with a two-run single that was followed by a Jack Boyles RBI single.
  • MJ Doan and Carson Dahle provided good relief for Belmont Abbey pitching scoreless frames in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively.
  • Catawba capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth inning after a Crusader error.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with 10 hits and three errors on the day.

  • Belmont Abbey will face the loser of Wingate-Young Harris at 2 p.m. Friday afternoon at Newman Park.
