SALISBURY, N.C. — Joe Whitaker drove in four runs and
Caleb Burr hit two home runs as the Belmont Abbey saw its season come to an end at the NCAA Southeast Regional against Wingate Friday at Newman Park.
The Crusaders fell to the Bulldogs 14-10 in the first elimination game of the regional.
Belmont Abbey closes its season with a 38-16 record. Wingate is 40-18 and advances to another elimination game against either Young Harris or Catawba.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Wingate got on the board with a two-run home run to start off the game but the Crusaders answered with an RBI double from Whitaker.
- After the Bulldogs added a run in the top of the third inning, Whitaker gave Belmont Abbey a 4-3 lead with a three-run home run for his 24th of the season.
- Wingate broke the game open with a 10-run fourth inning.
- Mason Janz added an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth inning while Burr hit a pair of solo home runs in the fifth and seventh innings.
- Janz finished with a three-hit day as well for the Crusaders.
- The two home runs gave Burr 20 on the season.
- The final run for the Bulldogs came in the seventh inning.
- Belmont Abbey capped the scoring with a three-run run home run from Jacob Steinberg in the ninth inning.
- Spencer Cipro took the loss for Belmont Abbey after pitching 3.1 innings.
