Men’s Lacrosse Clinches Share of Regular Season Title, Top Seed on Senior Day

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team clinched at least a share of the regular season title and the top seed in the upcoming Conference Carolinas Tournament as the Crusaders defeated Shorter 35-2 Saturday at Alumni Field.

19 different Crusaders tallied goals as the Crusaders finished with a season-high in scoring and wrapped up the home schedule with a victory.

Prior to the contest, Belmont Abbey celebrated 11 seniors in a pre-game ceremony. The seniors recognized: Brendan Boschi, Colby Dobbins, Nick Hahn, Jeremy Mahoney, Connor Mann, Maximiliano Mora, Gavin Mott, Joseph Penner, Vincent Scalzo, John Valetto and Sam Walser.

With the win, Belmont Abbey improves to 11-3 overall and 7-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Shorter is 0-12 overall and 0-7 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Nate Lorenzo finished with a game-high five goals, all coming in the first half of play.
  • The Crusaders scored 21 unanswered goals to start the game.
  • Connor Mann and Elliott Malcolm scored four goals each for the Crusaders.
  • Boschi had two goals and five assists on the afternoon.
  • Matthew Peterson led the way defensively for Belmont Abbey as he had nine ground balls to go with four caused turnovers. He was also credited with an assist.
  • Scalzo, Isaac Collins, Jackson Weaver, Oliver Meyer and Zach Kenney all scored their first goals of the season.
  • Eddie Kielkopf earned the win making one save in a quarter of play.
  • Fynn Ziebarth and James McGrath made one and two saves, respectively.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with 74 shots, 51 on goal.
  • The Crusaders also finished with 66 ground balls and 23 caused turnovers.

  • Belmont Abbey closes the regular season with a Conference Carolinas game at Mount Olive on Friday.
  • The contest is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
