BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned its second straight home victory as the Crusaders used a late-inning push to defeat Augusta 11-8 Wednesday evening at Abbey Yard.
Tied 8-8 into the bottom of the seventh inning, the Crusaders used baserunning to take a two-run lead and added another insurance run in the eighth to secure its fourth victory in the last five games.
Jake Bidoglio had three hits while
Matthew Fattore,
Mason Janz and
Jack Boyles each had two hits.
Davin Miller-Madden earned his first win as a Crusader with 5.2 innings of relief and
Wyatt Clarke picked up the save.
Belmont Abbey is now 18-8 on the season while Augusta is now 13-13.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Augusta got on the board first on a fielder's choice in the top of the first inning.
- The Crusaders answered with a pair of runs on the first inning when Caleb Burr drew a bases-loaded walk and Janz scored on a ground out.
- The Jaguars added five runs in the second and Belmont Abbey chipped away with a two-run double with an RBI double from Joe Whitaker.
- The Crusaders tied the game in the third with an RBI double from Bidoglio and an RBI ground out from Boyles.
- After Augusta took the lead in the fifth, Fattore pulled the Abbey even with a two-run single.
- Miller-Madden struck out six and allowed just two runs on two hits.
- Boyles scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch and later scored on an attempted double steal.
- The Crusaders capped the scoring with a sacrifice fly from Todd Velotta in the eighth innings.
- Josh Wise and Wyatt Clarke pitched scoreless eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close out the game.
