BELMONT, N.C. — Caleb Burr capped off another late comeback for the Belmont Abbey baseball team Tuesday night against Lander by a hitting a walk-off three-run home run to defeat the Bearcats 9-6 at Abbey Yard.
Burr's blast was his second home run of the game as the Crusaders rallied from two runs down in the ninth to tie the game before winning the contest in extra innings. It is the second walk-off winner within the past week after
Joe Whitaker hit a walk-off home run in a win over UNC Pembroke Friday.
Belmont Abbey improves to 14-7 on the season while Lander is now 14-9.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Carson Dahle got the start for the Crusaders and retired the first three Lander batters on just eight pitches to open the game.
- The Crusaders jumped out ahead in the bottom of the first inning with an RBI triple from Connor Paul and an RBI single from Jake Bidoglio.
- Paul finished with a season-high four hits on the day.
- The Bearcats answered with a pair of runs in the second inning before Burr's first home run of the game gave Belmont Abbey a 3-2 lead in the third.
- Lander added two more runs in the fifth and sixth innings before an RBI from Carter Bass in the sixth inning made it 6-4.
- Belmont Abbey got out of a jam in the seventh inning when Jack Boyles completed a double play to end the inning.
- The Bearcats had runners on the corners in the ninth but a lineout to Bass helped Belmont Abbey get out of the inning.
- A pair of pinch hitters provided the tying runs for the Abbey in the ninth inning as Brady Roberts hit an RBI single while Evan MacIntyre's at-bat helped Belmont Abbey tie the game at 6-6.
- A close play at first base ended the ninth inning to send the game to extras.
- After turning away the Bearcats, Mason Janz and Bidoglio reached on a single and hit by pitch before Burr's walk-off winner.
- Bailey Faircloth pitched a scoreless 10th inning and earned his first win of the season.
- All nine starters recorded a hit for the Abbey in Tuesday's contest.
