TIGERVILLE, S.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team got another outstanding start from
Drew Stegura and capitalized on a seven-run fifth inning as the Crusaders defeated No. 1 North Greenville in a Conference Carolinas series opener Friday afternoon at Ray & Bea Dillard Field.
Stegura allowed just one run and three hits while recording seven strikeouts against the Trailblazers offense as he picked up his fifth win of the season.
Jacob Steinberg and
Caleb Burr had two hits each to lead the offense for the Abbey with Steinberg driving in three runs.
Belmont Abbey improves to 15-7 overall and 12-4 in Conference Carolinas play while North Greenville is 19-5 overall and 10-3 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Both teams were locked in a pitcher's duel early as the teams combined for just one hit over the first three innings.
- Connor Paul got the offense started with a lead-off double in the fourth for the Abbey.
- NGU scored the first run in the bottom of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
- Steinberg and Todd Velotta got the fifth inning started with back-to-back singles and Steinberg later scored on a sacrifice fly from Jack Boyles.
- Paul's RBI groundout gave the Abbey a 2-1 lead.
- The inning continued after Burr reached first on a North Greenville error with the bases loaded to make it 3-1.
- That was followed by two runs batted in each by Joe Whitaker and Steinberg to make it 7-1.
- Stegura continued his strong performance on the mound by allowing just one base runner over the final three innings of his outing.
- The Crusaders extended the lead with two more runs in the seventh.
- The first came on a fielder's choice with Steinberg batting followed by a second sacrifice fly from Boyles.
- Belmont Abbey capped the scoring with a two-run home run from Burr. He now has 10 home runs on the season.
- Ethan Yarbrough and Davin Miller-Madden each pitched scoreless innings in the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to close the game out.
