Late-Inning Rally Lifts No. 22 Abbey Baseball to Victory in Home Opener

BELMONT, N.C. —  The No. 22 Belmont Abbey baseball team put together a strong late-inning rally as the Crusaders defeated Emmanuel 12-8 Friday evening in the home opener at Abbey Yard.

Friday's contest also marked the Conference Carolinas opener for both teams.

Caleb Burr had three hits on the day while three other Crusaders had two hits each. Hunter Sherrill earned the win after pitching three innings of scoreless relief while Sawyer Osborne earned the save.

Belmont Abbey is now 2-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play. Emmanuel is now 1-3 and 0-1 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After a scoreless first inning, Emmanuel jumped ahead with a three-run second inning and a two-run fourth inning.
  • Todd Velotta recorded the first hit of the night for the Abbey with a lead-off double in the bottom of the fourth. He later scored on an RBI single from Michael Fattore.
  • Drew Stegura got the start and struck out four and allowed seven runs on five hits.
  • Hunter Sherrill came in relief of Drew Stegura and worked out of a jam to keep it 5-0  in the fifth. Sherrill allowed just one run and struck out three in 3-plus innings of relief.
  • The Crusaders chipped away closer in the fifth thanks to an RBI triple from Matthew Fattore to drive in Jack Boyles. Boyles led off the inning with an infield single.
  • Belmont Abbey broke through in the seventh inning with five runs in the frame.
  • Jake Bidoglio got the inning started with a double and later scored on an RBI single from Boyles to make it 5-3.
  • Jacob Steinberg delivered a run with a pinch-hit RBI single while Matthew Fattore and Velotta had consecutive sacrifice flies to give Belmont Abbey the lead.
  • Caleb Burr capped the inning with an RBI double to make it 7-5.
  • Emmanuel got a run back in the eighth but Sawyer Osborne helped preserve the lead for the Crusaders, recording the final out with two runners in scoring position.
  • The game broke open when Michael Fattore reached on a Lions error with the bases loaded. The play allowed all three runners to score.
  • Fattore later scored on an RBI single from Burr. Burr scored on a putout on the final play of the inning.
  • The Lions got two runs back in the ninth with a two-run home run but Osborne retired the next three batters to earn his first save as a Crusader.

The series concludes with a doubleheader on Saturday.
First pitch of the opener is scheduled for noon at Abbey Yard.
