No. 22 Abbey Baseball Completes Saturday Sweep of Emmanuel

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Emmanuel thanks to two wins in a doubleheader Saturday at Abbey Yard.

The Crusaders took the first game 13-4 in the opener before earning a 7-3 win over the Lions in the nightcap.

Jack Boyles finished with five hits and drove in four runs over the course of the day while Joe Whitaker had four hits on the day.

Spencer Cipro earned his first win of the season with six shutout innings in the opener while Ethan Yarborough earned the win in relief in the second game.

With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey improves to 4-0 overall and 3-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Emmanuel is 1-5 overall, 0-3 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
  • The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead with a three-run first inning.
  • Matthew Fattore scored on an RBI double from Michael Fattore while Caleb Burr and Whitaker drove in runs via a sacrifice fly and an RBI double.
  • Matthew Fattore kept the charge going in the second inning with an RBI single while the Crusaders scored a run on a double play to make it 5-0.
  • Belmont Abbey added three more in the fifth thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jake Bidoglio and and an RBI single from Boyles.
  • Boyles later scored on a rundown play in the inning.
  • The Crusaders broke the game open in the sixth scoring on a double steal, a two-run single from Jacob Steinberg and a two-run single from Boyles.
  • Cipro pitched six shutout innings and struck out three and allowed just three hits.
  • Emmanuel drove in four runs in the ninth but the Crusaders were able to eventually secure the win.

GAME 2
  • The Crusaders jumped out to a lead in the second inning as Whitaker led the inning off with a single and later scored on a wild pitch.
  • After Emmanuel took the lead in the third inning, the Crusaders pulled even at 2-2 thanks to an Rbi single from Josh Wilson.
  • Ethan Yarbrough allowed just one hit in his next two innings of relief.
  • The Crusaders took the lead for good in the fifth with a two-run double from Bidoglio.
  • Emmanuel got a run back in the sixth but added two more in the seventh thanks to Carter Bass and Wilson getting RBIs after both were hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.
  • The Crusaders capped the scoring with an RBI single from Boyles in the eighth inning.
  • Jacob Larkins pitched a scoreless ninth inning to close the game out.

UP NEXT
  • Belmont Abbey heads back on the road to face Lander on Tuesday.
  • First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. in Greenwood, S.C.
