Abbey Holds Off Montevallo for First Road Win of Season

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Nate Lorenzo tallied three goals and Eddie Kielkopf recorded 15 saves as the Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team held off Montevallo for an 8-7 victory Saturday afternoon.

The Crusaders jumped out to a fast start scoring the first five goals of the game and later scoring three straight goals after the Falcons had rallied to tie.

Lorenzo had three goals while Brendan Boschi added a goal and pair of assists.

The Crusaders picked up their first road victory of the season and are now 2-1 on the year. Montevallo, who was receiving votes in the USILA Coaches Poll, is now 3-3 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Crusaders jumped out to an early lead thanks the opening goal from Blayze Becker just over three minutes in.
  • Belmont Abbey scored three more goals in the opening quarter, including two from Lorenzo in 17 seconds.
  • Jeremy Mahoney got the opening goal of the second quarter for the Abbey.
  • Montevallo answered with five straight goals to pull even at halftime.
  • The Crusaders pulled ahead with two goals in the third from Boschi and Xavier Miller.
  • Lorenzo's goal early in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference.
  • Montevallo scored two goals in a span of 29 seconds in the final quarter but the Crusaders were able to hold on with a final defensive stand.
  • The Crusaders finished with 25 ground balls led by four from Matthew Peterson.
  • Boschi and Gavin Mott had two caused turnovers each for the Crusaders.
  • Kielkopf's 15 saves was a season high.

  • The Crusaders host No. 10 Wingate next Saturday in a battle of top teams from the Southeast region.
