BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team returned to action in a big way Friday as the Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of rival Mount Olive Friday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders pulled away for an 11-2 victory in the opener and the offense kept things rolling in a 22-5 victory in the nightcap.
Michael Fattore was one of the many standouts on the day, finishing with five hits that included two home runs and drove in nine runs.
Caleb Burr also hit two home runs on the day while
Jake Bidoglio homered twice in the opener.
With Friday's results, Belmont Abbey improves to 9-2 overall and 8-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Mount Olive is 3-7 overall and 1-4 in the conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- The Crusaders worked well defensively to start the game by ending the first two innings on the bases.
- Burr got the scoring started with an RBI single in the first inning.
- After Mount Olive got on the board with a run in the third, an RBI double from Joe Whitaker put the Abbey back in front.
- The sixth featured home runs by both the Trojans and Crusaders with Bidoglio's home run regaining a 3-2 lead for the Abbey.
- Drew Stegura earned the win thanks to five strikeouts and allowing just two runs in six innings.
- Michael Fattore helped the Abbey break the game open in the seventh with an RBI double followed by a grand slam in the eighth inning.
- The eighth was capped off with back-to-back home runs from Burr and Bidoglio.
- Bailey Faircloth earned the save after striking out three in two scoreless inning of relief.
- Isaac Williams also added a scoreless inning of relief for the Abbey.
GAME 2
- Hunter Sherrill got the start for the Abbey and was able to work his way out of a first-inning jam.
- Todd Velotta got the scoring started with an single and later scored on an RBI single from Burr.
- Bidoglio added an RBI double and later scored on a wild pitch in the first inning.
- The second inning saw the game break open with home runs from Josh Wilson and a grand slam from Burr.
- The Trojans scored one run each in the second and third innings.
- Michael Fattore drove in two more runs with a double in the third and later added a two-run home run in the fourth as part of a four-run inning.
- Ethan Bunce drove in a run for the Abbey in the fifth while the Crusaders added six more in the sixth highlighted by a two-run home run from Brady Roberts.
- Ethan Yarbrough earned his second win of the season by pitching two innings of scoreless relief and recording three strikeouts.
- The Crusaders finished with 10 extra-base hits in the nightcap.
