BELMONT, N.C. — Riley James scored a game-high 13 points as part of three in double figures scoring but it was not enough as the Belmont Abbey women's basketball team fell 59-50 to Barton Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center.
Prior to Saturday's contest, James and fellow senior
Emily Driver were honored on Senior Day in a pregame ceremony. Driver also made her first start of the season in the contest.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 17-6 overall and 12-4 in Conference Carolinas play. Barton is 16-8 overall with an identical 12-4 conference record.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders found itself behind early trailing 11-2 but an 8-2 run helped Belmont Abbey close the gap on the Bulldogs.
- A 3-pointer from Sofia McNabb got back to within 17-15 at the end of the first quarter.
- Another 3-pointer from Madison Lusk to open the second quarter gave the Crusaders its first lead of the game at 18-17.
- The basket was the start of a 14-4 run for the Crusaders in the second quarter.
- Belmont Abbey and Barton exchanged the lead separate times in the third quarter.
- The Crusaders were held in check in the fourth quarter with just eight points.
- The Abbey shot just 28.3 percent from the field for the contest.
- Leigha Dennison added 12 points while Madison Lusk had 10 points and three steals.
- McNabb added nine points off the bench.
- James led the Crusaders with five steals.
- Janiah Shular led the Crusaders with 11 rebounds.

- Belmont Abbey continues its final homestand of the season with a contest against Erskine Monday.
