ROME, Ga. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team capped off its second consecutive three-game sweep in Conference Carolinas play as the Crusaders defeated Shorter 24-5 Saturday afternoon at Robert Ledbetter Stadium.
After scoring 42 runs over a doubleheader Friday, the Crusaders continued their impressive performance at the plate with another 25 hits on Saturday.
Josh Wilson put together a stellar day at the plate for the Abbey, finishing 4-for-4 with six runs batted in including his first home run of the season.
Seven other Crusaders finished with two multiple hits on the day, including
Joe Whitaker and
Matthew Fattore with three hits each while
Todd Velotta and
Jacob Steinberg drove In four runs.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 7-1 on the season and 6-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Shorter is now 5-3 overall, 0-3 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders got on the board with an RBI single from Joe Whitaker, who later scored on a two-run single from Jake Bidoglio.
- After a three-run first inning from Shorter, the Crusaders broke the game open in the second with a nine-run frame and sending 12 batters to the plate.
- Velotta, Steinberg and Wilson drove in two runs each in the inning while Carter Bass had an RBI and later scored on a wild pitch.
- Wilson's home run came in the fourth inning.
- Shorter scored runs in the third and fourth inning.
- MJ Doan and Isaac Williams accounted for just one run allowed through 4.1 innings pitched of relief.
- Ethan Yarbrough, Seth Brooks and Jacob Larkins combined to allow just one hit thorugh the final four innings.
- Belmont Abbey added another six-run sixth inning with two runs batted in each from Wilson and Steinberg.
- The Crusaders scored two runs in both the seventh and ninth innings, highlighted by a home run from Jack Boyles in the seventh, an RBI double from Brady Roberts and an RBI single from Evan MacIntyre in the ninth.
- Belmont Abbey accounted for 64 hits and 66 runs in the three games against Shorter with nine home runs over the course of the weekend.
