ROME, Ga. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team put together one of its best offensive efforts in recent history as the Crusaders put up 42 runs in a Conference Carolinas doubleheader Friday afternoon against Shorter at Robert Ledbetter Stadium.
The Crusaders surged ahead for a 31-3 victory over the Hawks in the opener before earning an 11-2 victory in the second game of the twin bill.
The 31 runs scored in the first game is the first time that the Crusaders have surpassed 30 runs since a 35-3 win against Brevard back on April 12, 2016.
Belmont Abbey improves to 6-1 overall on the season and 5-0 in Conference Carolinas play while Shorter is 5-2 overall and 0-2 in the league.
GAME 1
- The Crusaders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead starting with Jacob Steinberg's two-run single followed by two runs scoring on a fielder's choice from Jack Boyles.
- Belmont Abbey kept it going in the second inning with an RBI single from Michael Fattore followed by the first of two home runs from Joe Whitaker.
- The Abbey broke the game open in the third as Jake Bidoglio, Carter Bass and Steinberg all homered as part of a seven-run inning.
- Whitaker hit his second home run in the fourth as part of a six-run frame that saw the Crusaders reach 20 runs.
- Belmont Abbey added eight runs in the sixth, highlighted by an inside the park grand slam from Michael Fattore.
- Brady Roberts capped the Crusader scoring with a three-run home in the seventh.
- Drew Stegura kept Shorter without a hit for the first three innings. He finished with nine strikeouts and four walks and one hit over five innings.
- Four Crusader pitchers each threw an inning out of the bullpen to help finish the game.
- Every starter recorded a hit in the opener for the Crusaders, finishing with 25 hits.
GAME 2
- The Crusaders picked up where they left off in the first inning starting with Steinberg's RBI single in the first inning. He added RBI singles in the fourth and fifth innings.
- Shorter answered with a run off a wild pitch in the first and a solo home run in the third to make it 2-1.
- The Crusaders broke the game open again in the fourth with a six-run frame starting with Matthew Fattore scoring on a Shorter error.
- Steinberg and Michael Fattore each had RBI singles and the inning was capped off by a double from Boyles that resulted in three runs scoring to make it 7-2.
- Along with Steinberg, Bidoglio added an RBI single in the fifth while Matthew Fattore capped the scoring with a two-run single in the seventh.
- Spencer Cipro pitched a complete game for the Crusaders, pitching seven innings and allowing just two runs on five hits. He finished with four strikeouts and three walks.

- The series concludes with a single, nine-inning game Saturday.
