Balanced Effort Helps Crusaders Defeat Chowan

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's basketball team closed out its three-game home stand on a strong note as the Crusaders earned a wire-to-wire 63-56 victory over Chowan Saturday afternoon at the Wheeler Center.

Leigha Dennison led a balanced effort for the Abbey, finishing with a game-high 12 points to go with three rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Madison Lusk also finished in double figures with 10 points and four steals and three assists.

Sofia McNabb led the effort off the bench while four other Crusaders tallied eight points each in the contest.

With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 12-4 overall and 7-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Chowan is now 7-7 overall and 5-5 in league play.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey got off to a strong start thanks to a 6-0 run to begin the game.
  • Outside shooting proved to be a key in the second quarter as four of the seven field goals made by the Crusaders in the second quarter came from 3-point range.
  • Lusk's 3-pointer with 3:18 left in the first half gave the Abbey a 32-16 lead. The 16-point lead was its largest of the game.
  • Chowan scored the first five points of the second half but the Crusaders were able to get the lead back to double figures.
  • The Hawks got as close as four points late in the third quarter but a pair of baskets from Bella Martin and a buzzer-beater from Riley James to end the quarter gave the Crusaders an eight-point advantage.
  • A three-point play from Janiah Shular followed by a Dennison basket helped the Crusaders go back up by 11.
  • A 3-pointer by Martin with under four minutes to go put the Abbey up by 12 to help close out the game.
  • The Crusaders finished with 15 steals on the day and George led the Crusaders with eight rebounds.
  • This is the fifth game this season that the Crusaders did not trail at any point.

UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders conclude their run through the East Division with a contest at Mount Olive on Monday.
  • Tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Kornegay Arena.
