BELMONT, N.C. — Belmont Abbey senior guard
Riley James finished with a season-high in points and two other Crusaders finished in double figures scoring as part of a 67-38 victory over Conference Carolinas newcomer Ferrum Tuesday evening at the Wheeler Center.
James scored a game-high 21 points — matching a team season-high for any Crusader this season — to go with six assists and six rebounds.
Brielle George recorded her fifth double-double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds while
Leigha Dennison had 10 points. Additionally, James and Dennison had two blocks each.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Belmont Abbey as it improves to 11-4 overall and 6-2 in Conference Carolinas play. Ferrum is 6-11 overall and 4-4 in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Janiah Shular accounted for the scoring early on for the Abbey with the first four points of the game
- After taking a 4-3 lead, the Crusaders closed the quarter on a 17-5 run.
- George and James accounted for 12 of the 15 Belmont Abbey points in the second quarter as the Crusaders took a 19 point lead into halftime.
- Ferrum opened the second half on an 8-2 run but James closed the quarter scoring the final four points for the Abbey as the Crusaders built up the lead back to 18 points.
- An 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter helped the Abbey put the game away.
- The Crusaders finished with a season-best 22 assists with James and Bella Martin leading the way with six each.
- Belmont Abbey matched its season-best eight 3-pointers made.
- Madison Lusk, James and Dennison had two steals each as well for the Crusaders.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders host Chowan in a Conference Carolinas contest on Saturday.
- Tip-off is scheduled at 2 p.m. from the Wheeler Center.
