BELMONT, N.C. -- Gabe Cerda led four players in double figures but game-winning shot attempts at the end of regulation and overtime fell just short in a 78-75 victory by Ferrum over Belmont Abbey Tuesday night.
The Conference Carolinas result drops the Crusaders to 5-9 overall and 3-5 in league play, while the Panthers improve to 7-6, 6-2 in their first season in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Cerda tallied a career-high 21 points, hitting seven of 11 shots, while grabbing five rebounds. He also dished out two assists and made a steal. His half-court heave at the regulation buzzer bounced softly off the rim.
- Jadah Ravenell added 15 points and a team-high six boards, while Elijah Burnett dished out a team-best six assists to go along with 14 points. Franklin Davis rounded out the double-digit scoring with 10 points, but saw a tough baseline jumper to win the game with two seconds remaining come up short.
- Belmont Abbey shot over 50 percent for the first time against a Division II opponent this this season, connecting on 27 of 53 attempts (50.9 percent). It was the third-best effort overall.
- The Abbey held a 30-28 advantage on the boards, while the Panthers forced three more turnovers (11 forced vs. 8 committed).
- The biggest lead for either team was eight points (Ferrum up 47-39 with 15:02 left in regulation).
