BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey women's soccer team celebrated 10 seniors on Senior Day as the Crusaders hosted Young Harris Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
In a back-and-forth battle, the two teams played to a 3-3 draw that featured five goals in the second half of play.
Ten seniors were honored in a pre-match ceremony:
Gianna Carneglia,
Sydney Ferst,
Karis Peterson,
Sabrina Cunha,
McKenna Schwarz, Anna Richard,
Addie Galek,
Francesca Highton,
Izzy Gagliardi and
Grace Gilmore.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 4-3-1 overall and 3-1-1 in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is now 3-3-2 overall and 2-1-2 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Young Harris got on the board in the 14th minute with the first shot of the match.
- Hannah Willis and Cunha accounted for the first two shots on goal for the Abbey.
- Belmont Abbey took nine shots in the first half compared to one for the Mountain Lions.
- Highton pulled the Abbey even with her first goal as a Crusader early in the second half via an assist from Richard.
- Belmont Abbey captured the lead thanks to Sabrina Cunha's strike from distance in the 72nd minute.
- Young Harris pulled even with a goal less than two minutes late.
- Belmont Abbey added a third goal with Richard tapping one in on a scramble in the 78th minute.
- Young Harris' Scarlett Hirschy pulled the Mountain Lions even with just over two minutes to play in the match.
- The Crusaders finished with 14 shots on goal and 10 corner kicks.
- Carneglia made two saves in goal for the Abbey.
