BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey field hockey scored the most goals in a single game in six years as the Crusaders capped off a three-game homestand with a 9-0 victory over Barton Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Margaret Malcolm and
Hailey Leatherman finished with two goal games while
Avery Bourke and
Eileen Schwab both tallied their first career goals in the win.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 2-3 overall and 2-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Barton is now 0-4 and 0-2 in the league in its first year of competition.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Isabella Hite got the Crusaders on the board with 3:33 remaining in the opening quarter.
- Malcolm added the first of her two goals in the closing moments of the quarter.
- The Crusaders added three more goals before halftime thanks to Taryn Sabia, Leatherman and Malcolm.
- Isabel Stankiewicz and Bourke got credited with assists on the third and fourth goals, respectively.
- Bourke and Schwab's first career goals both came in the third quarter. Kennedy Gross earned her first assist on Bourke's tally.
- Leatherman and Jillian Cain capped the scoring with two goals in the fourth quarter.
- The Crusaders finished with 34 shots, 25 of which on goal. The marks are the sixth and third best in a single game, respectively.
- Lily Willard and Annmarie Mullen each played a half to combine for the shutout.
- The nine goals is the most since Belmont Abbey scored eight against Coker back in September of 2019.
