BELMONT, N.C. — Nicki Jonkers tallied two goals and
Chloe Kiser added two assists as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team earned a 3-1 victory over Wingate Wednesday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Jonkers scored the first two goals of her Crusader career while
Sarah Schumacher added an early second-half goal to help the team to the first win of the season.
Belmont Abbey is now 1-3 overall and 1-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Wingate is 2-2 overall and 1-1 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The first goal from Belmont Abbey came midway through the first penalty corner of the contest as Jonkers got it past the Wingate goalkeeper thanks to an assist from Kiser.
- The Crusaders took two shots in the first quarter.
- Lily Willard made the first of her three saves in the second quarter to help Belmont Abbey preserve a 1-0 lead entering halftime.
- Belmont Abbey's second goal came in the early stages in the second half thanks to Schumacher's shot from the top of the shooting circle to make it 2-0.
- The Bulldogs got a goal back to make it 2-1 with less than five minutes to go in the third quarter.
- The Crusaders pushed the lead back to two thanks to Jonkers' second goal off the Kiser assist with 24 seconds left in the third quarter.
- The Abbey's defense stood tall, allowing just one shot in the fourth quarter to help secure the win.
- The Crusaders finished with seven shots, four on goal.
- The team also had five penalty corners in the contest.
