BELMONT, N.C. — Jack Boyles was one of three Belmont Abbey baseball players to tally multiple hits as the Crusaders took on No. 3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne in a winner's bracket game Friday evening at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders finished with 11 hits but it was Lenoir-Rhyne who came away with the 13-7 victory. Friday night's result snapped a six-game win streak for the Crusaders.
Belmont Abbey is now 41-16 on the season while Lenoir-Rhyne is now 45-12.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Lenoir-Rhyne got on the board in the top of the first inning with a two-run home run in the first inning.
- The Crusaders answered with runs in the second and third innings with RBI singles from Boyles and Carter DuHaime.
- The Bears answered with two more runs in the fourth inning but Belmont Abbey got back within 4-3 after a sacrifice fly from Todd Velotta.
- Jackson Risk added a sacrifice fly in the fifth but Lenoir-Rhyen extended the lead with three runs in the third and one in the sixth.
- Matthew Fattore hit his first home run at Abbey Yard with a leadoff home run in the sixth.
- Connor Powell and Josh Wilson added a pinch-hit RBI single in the seventh and a bases loaded walk in the ninth, respectively.
- Ethan Wilson took the loss for the Crusaders.
- Joe Whitaker drew four walks and scored three runs in the contest for the Abbey.
UP NEXT
- Belmont Abbey faces elimination against No. 6 seed North Georgia in an elimination game at 4 p.m. Saturday at Abbey Yard.
- If the Crusaders win, they will turn around and face No. 3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m. Saturday night, needing two games to win the regional.
