BANNER ELK, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team had its best offensive output of the season by scoring a season-best 21 goals in a 21-7 victory over Lees-McRae Wednesday afternoon at Tate Field.
The Crusaders had 14 different goal scorers on the afternoon with three each coming from
Nate Lorenzo,
Mikey Sweigart and
Connor Mann. Lorenzo added two assists for a five-point game while
Quinn Smith had four points with a goal and three assists.
Goalkeeper
Eddie Kielkopf made six saves in his first career start to earn the win in goal for the Crusaders.
With Wednesday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 8-2 overall and 4-0 in Conference Carolinas play. Lees-McRae drops to 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders jumped out to a fast start by scoring the first three goals of the contest.
- Nate Lorenzo's first of his three goals came just 25 seconds into the game.
- After the Bobcats scored three straight goals of their own, Belmont Abbey responded with goals from Lorenzo and Jack Clough to take a 5-3 lead after the opening quarter.
- Belmont Abbey broke the game open in the second quarter with a five-goal frame, including three in the span of 1:04 of game play.
- Connor Mann accounted for two goals with Lorenzo, Thomas Lewis and Jacob Chandler accounted for the other goals of the quarter.
- The Crusaders added six more goals in the third quarter and kept the Bobcats off the board to cap off a run of 13 unanswered goals.
- Ben Johnson, Jackson Weaver, Duncan Smith all tallied their first career goals in the contest for the Abbey.
- Belmont Abbey also finished with a season-high 11 assists and had 35 shots on goal, both season bests.
- Gavin Craven also made his first career appearance in goal for the Abbey, making one save.
- Belmont Abbey finished with 11 caused turnovers in the contest.
- With the win, Belmont Abbey officially clinched a berth in the Conference Carolinas Touranment.
