Crusaders Close Regular Season with Victory over Emmanuel

BELMONT, N.C. — Eddie Kielkopf finished with 13 saves while Jeremy Mahoney had a four-point game as the Belmont Abbey men's lacrosse team closed the regular season with a 14-6 win over Emmanuel Wednesday at Alumni Field.

The Crusaders captured the win thanks in part to outscoring the Lions 5-0 in the second quarter to pull away for the win.The offense was also aggressive with 57 shots, one shy of their season high.

Mikey Sweigart led the Abbey with three goals in the game.

Belmont Abbey closes the regular season with a 10-3 overall record and 6-1 record in Conference Carolinas play. Emmanuel finishes the regular season at 8-6 overall and 3-4 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Emmanuel scored the first two goals of the contest before John Valetto got the Abbey on the board. Valetto finished with two goals on the afternoon.
  • After the Lions went up 3-1, Xavier Miller and Jeremy Mahoney tallied goals to make it 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.
  • The Crusaders went on to score the next seven goals — five in the second and two in the third — before Emmanuel scored again.
  • Nate Lorenzo's two goals both came after halftime.
  • Xavier Miller and Jack Clough also scored two goals on the day for the Abbey.
  • Michael Dixon won 14 faceoffs and finished with nine ground balls.
  • Matt Campfield and Luc Danis had two caused turnovers each for Belmont Abbey.

  • Belmont Abbey will be the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Conference Carolinas Tournament.
  • The Crusaders will return to action against the winner of the 3/6 matchup on Friday, April 25 at Mount Olive.
