YOUNG HARRIS, Ga. — Ethan Wilson put together one of his best starts of the season for the Belmont Abbey baseball team as he pitched seven shutout innings against Young Harris Saturday afternoon at Zell B. Miller Field.
His efforts helped Belmont Abbey earn a 2-0 win in the series finale against the Mountain Lions after dropping a 7-3 contest in the opening game on Saturday.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 29-14 overall and 18-9 in Conference Carolinas play. Young Harris is now 30-12 overall and 17-7 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- After a scoreless first inning, a solo home run from Joe Whitaker got Belmont Abbey on the board.
- Young Harris took the lead with three runs in the third inning.
- Connor Tucker put Belmont Abbey back within a run thanks to a leadoff home run in the fourth.
- The Mountain Lions broke the game open with four runs in the sixth inning.
- Todd Velotta had an RBI single in the seventh inning and the Crusaders had the bases loaded in the final frame but were unable to get closer.
- Spencer Cipro took the loss for Belmont Abbey. He struck out five over 5.1 innings.
GAME 2
- The Crusaders took an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from Jack Boyles in the second inning.
- Belmont Abbey loaded the bases in the fourth but YHC held the Crusaders off the scoreboard.
- The only other run of the game came in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from Justin Herrera.
- Wilson struck out six over seven innings and allowed just three hits in seven innings of work.
- Thomas Paxton recorded the final six outs to record his sixth save of the season.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will play two games on the road before taking time off for the Easter break.
- Belmont Abbey travels to Mars Hill Tuesday and Augusta Wednesday.
