BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Chowan thanks to a sweep of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard. The Crusaders defeated the Hawks 6-2 in the opener before rallying for an 11-10 victory in the series finale.
Connor Powell finished with four hits over the two games while
Connor Tucker had three hits, including the go-ahead RBI double in the eighth to help the Crusaders complete the sweep.
Spencer Cipro — who matched his career high from last week with 10 strikeouts —and
Thomas Paxton both earned wins on the mound for the Crusaders.
With the two wins, Belmont Abbey improves to 24-11 overall and 14-7 in Conference Carolinas play. Chowan is now 4-22 overall and 2-16 in league play.
GAME 1
- After Chowan struck first in the first inning, the Crusaders got on the board with an RBI groundout from Jackson Risk.
- Todd Velotta followed that with a two-run double to make it 3-1 in favor of the Crusaders.
- The game stayed that way until the bottom of the fourth inning when the Abbey scored two runs on a Chowan error.
- Tucker capped the scoring for the Crusaders after scoring a run off a wild pitch.
- Chowan added a run in the seventh but Cipro closed the game with his 10th strikeout to seal the win for the Crusaders.
GAME 2
- Both teams put two runs on the board in the top of the first inning with an RBI double from Whitaker and another run via a Chowan error.
- Chowan jumped out to a three-run lead in the second inning but Caleb Burr hit his team best 10th home run of the season to pull the Abbey back even at 5-5.
- The Hawks added another run in the fourth and three in the sixth but Belmont Abbey pulled even again thanks to a game-tying grand slam from Jackson Risk in the seventh.
- The game continued to go back and forth with the Hawks pulling ahead in the eight but the Crusaders answered with a game-tying RBI single from Connor Powell followed by the RBI double from Tucker two batters later.
- Chowan had the tying run on third base but Thomas Paxton struck out the side to close out the game and earn the win.
- Paxton recorded five strikeouts in 3.1 innings of relief.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders head on the road next week for four games.
- The first is a mid-week game on Tuesday at Wingate, which is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start.
- Belmont Abbey then heads on the road to face UNC Pembroke in a three-game series starting Friday in Florence, S.C.
