WINGATE, N.C. — Todd Velotta finished with his third three-hit day of the season as the Belmont Abbey baseball team opened a week-long road trip against Wingate Tuesday at Ron Christopher Stadium.
Velotta's three hits included his second home run of the season but the Crusaders fell 14-3 to the Bulldogs in the first meeting between the two programs this season.
Connor Tucker also had a two-hit day to lead the way offensively for the Abbey.
Belmont Abbey is 24-12 overall while Wingate is 17-17 following Tuesday's contest.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After a scoreless first inning, Velotta got the Crusaders off to a good start with a one-out home run to put the team on the board.
- Wingate responded with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the second.
- Tucker had his second double of the day in the third inning.
- The Bulldogs broke the game open with a nine-run third inning.
- Wingate added another run in the fifth and three more in the sixth innings.
- The Crusaders capped the scoring in the eighth inning with an RBI single from Andrew Grande and an RBI hit by pitch from Justin Herrera.
- Seth Edgerton took the loss for Belmont Abbey.
- Ryan Weller matched his career high with six strikeouts against the Bulldogs.

- The Belmont Abbey baseball team resumes Conference Carolinas play with a three-game series at UNC Pembroke starting Friday.
- The series has been moved from UNC Pembroke's campus to the Florence Sports Complex in Florence, South Carolina.
- First pitch of the series opener is scheduled for a 3 p.m. start Friday following by a doubleheader beginning at noon Saturday.
