BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a series win after splitting a doubleheader Saturday against No. 1 North Greenville Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders earned a 4-3 win in the opener before falling 10-1 in the second game of the twin bill.
Matthew Fattore and
Jackson Risk had two hits in the opener while
Spencer Cipro earned his fourth win of the season. Additionally,
Thomas Paxton recorded his second save of the weekend to help the Crusaders take the series clincher.
With Saturday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 12-6 overall, 6-3 in Conference Carolinas play. North Greenville is 16-3 overall with an identical 6-3 conference mark.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- After a scoreless first inning, the Crusaders struck first as Risk hit a leadoff home run that just cleared the center field wall to take a 1-0 lead.
- NGU took a 3-1 run lead in the top of the fourth inning but the Crusaders answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the frame to pull the game even.
- After hitting a one-out double, Risk later scored on a North Greenville error and Caleb Burr also scored on a second NGU error on a play at the plate.
- The Crusaders loaded the bases in the fifth but were unable to score in the frame.
- One inning later, Josh Wilson got the Abbey on base with a two-out single. Landon Hahn entered as a pinch runner and later scored on an RBI single from Matthew Fattore.
- Cipro finished with three strikeouts on 95 pitches in 6.1 innings and Paxton entered the game and recorded the final two outs to pick up his third save of the season.
GAME 2
- North Greenville got the game started with runs in the first and third innings.
- Belmont Abbey had two runners reach base in the first four innings via walk before Michael Fattore hit a single in the fifth for the Crusaders' first hit of the game.
- Ryan Weller recorded a career-high five strikeouts in three innings of relief for the Crusaders.
- NGU broke the game open with a six-run seventh inning.
- The lone run of the game for the Crusaders came on a fielder's choice when Velotta scored after reaching with a double earlier in the inning.
- NGU added two runs in the ninth to cap the scoring.
- Ethan McLain and Brady Emerson both recorded hits in the ninth inning for the Crusaders.
