Late-Inning Rally Helps Abbey Baseball Earn Win over Mars Hill

BELMONT, N.C. — Jack Boyles had three hits and was one of three Crusaders to drive in multiple runs as the Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a 13-10 win over Mars Hill Tuesday at Abbey Yard.
 
In a game that featured for lead changes and two ties, it was a three-run eighth inning that helped push the Abbey for its second straight win.
 
Joseph Hackmann earned the win in relief for Belmont Abbey while Thomas Paxton struck out the side in the ninth to earn the save.
 
With Tuesday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 3-1 on the season while Mars Hill is now 1-3.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Mars Hill got the game started with a two-run lead in the first but the Crusaders erased the deficit with a three-run home run from Jackson Risk.
  • A four-run third inning put Belmont Abbey behind again but the team chipped away with an RBI single from Michael Fattore in the fourth. Boyles scored after reaching on a one-out single and advancing to second on an error.
  • Brady Lencz got Belmont Abbey out of the third inning and kept the Lions off the board in the fourth.
  • Belmont Abbey took the lead back in the fifth with a six-run frame starting with Justin Herrera earning an RBI after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to make it 6-5.
  • Boyles tied the game with an RBI single before Michael Fattore cleared the bases with a three-run double.
  • Fattore would later score on an RBI double from Joe Whitaker.
  • Mars Hill added two more runs in the sixth and one in the seventh.
  • Belmont Abbey kept the lead thanks to a key defensive play as Caleb Burr and Jack Boyles combined to throw out the potential tying run to end the seventh inning.
  • The Crusaders were scoreless in the sixth and  seventh and Mars Hill tied the game thanks to a Belmont Abbey error in the eighth.
  • Matthew Fattore scored the go-ahead run in the eighth on a wild pitch while Burr and Boyles added insurance runs with RBI singles.
  • Boyles led the Abbey offense with three hits while Michael Fattore and Connor Tucker each had two.
  • Paxton retired Mars Hill in order to close the game out.
  • Six pitchers made an appearance in Tuesday's contest. 
  • The win is the fifth straight over Mars Hill.
UP NEXT
  • The Crusaders open a three-game series against Shepherd on Friday.
  • The series begins with a doubleheader at 2 p.m. Friday followed by a single game at noon Saturday from Abbey Yard.
