Abbey Baseball Surges Past Shepherd with Doubleheader Sweep

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team used an offensive surge in the first innings of both games as the Crusaders earned a doubleheader sweep over Shepherd Friday at Abbey Yard.
 
The Crusaders took the first game of the twin bill 20-2 before earning a 12-0 win over seven innings in the nightcap.
 
The Abbey found plenty of ways to reach base in the contest while accounting for 26 hits and 18 times reaching via hit by pitch. Additionally, Drew Stegura and Spencer Cipro each earned wins in their starts on the mound.
 
Belmont Abbey improves to 5-1 overall on the season while Shepherd is 0-2 following the first games of the season.
 
GAME 1
  • Stegura got Belmont Abbey off to a good start by striking out the first four batters he faced.
  • The Crusaders broke the game open early with a seven-run first inning starting with a two-run double from Caleb Burr and an RBI single from Jackson Risk.
  • Russell Golembe cleared the bases with three runs scoring off a single. Joe Whitaker followed that up with a sacrifice fly.
  • The Crusaders added runs in the second and third innings with a Tucker home run and an RBI double from Whitaker.
  • Jake Bidoglio (bases-clearing double) and Matthew Fattore (RBI single) accounted for the four runs in the fourth.
  • Golembe cleared the bases in the fifth with an RBI double and the Crusaders added the other four runs in the seventh off of three singles and an error.
  • Stegura struck out nine batters over five innings to earn his second win.
  • Seth Edgerton pitched two innings of relief while Ryan Conover and Jacob Larkins accounted for the other two scoreless innings to end the game.
  • Belmont Abbey was hit by a pitch 10 times in the contest.
 
GAME 2
  • Burr got Belmont Abbey started strong thanks to a two-run single in the first inning.
  • Matthew Fattore scored off a Shepherd error and Burr later scored on an RBI single from Risk in the third.
  • Belmont Abbey added three runs in the fourth, two on a double from Whitaker and anotherr via a fielder's choice.
  • Two big swings capped the scoring from the Crusaders in the fifth: a two-run double from Tucker and a three-run home run over the left field fence from Burr.
  • Cipro allowed five hits and struck out eight in his start while Carson Dahle had five strikeouts in his two innings of relief in his Crusader debut.
  • Belmont Abbey was hit eight times in the second game of the doubleheader.

  • The Crusaders close the three-game series with the series finale on Saturday.
