BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a doubleheader split in the opening weekend of Conference Carolinas play against Southern Wesleyan Friday at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders dropped a 5-4 contest in the opener before rallying back for a 9-5 win over the Warriors in the nightcap.
Five players from Belmont Abbey recorded two-hit games over the course of the two games while
Spencer Cipro earned his second win of the year in the nightcap.
Russell Golembe finished with four hits on the day to lead the Crusaders offensively.
With Friday's results, Belmont Abbey is 7-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. Southern Wesleyan is 2-8 overall with an identical 1-1 mark in league play.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- Southern Wesleyan took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning but Belmont Abbey responded with a pair of two-run frames in the second and third inning to take a 4-1 lead.
- In the second inning, Russell Golembe gave the Abbey the lead with a two-run double to drive in both Jack Boyles and Todd Velotta. The two had consecutive hits earlier in the inning.
- Jackson Risk and Velotta both helped extend the Abbey lead in the third with a single and double, respectively, to drive in runs.
- Drew Stegura kept the Warriors in check, finishing with seven strikeouts and allowing just one earned run on three hits in six innings of work.
- SWU took the lead for good with a three-run seventh inning.
- Belmont Abbey had chances to tie the game in the seventh and ninth innings but the Warriors ended both rallies with inning-ending double plays.
GAME 2
- The second game started out similarly to the first as SWU took an early 1-0 lead.
- Belmont Abbey got on the board in the second inning thanks to an RBI single from Golembe.
- The Crusaders took advantage of a few miscues from Southern Wesleyan by scoring three runs on a dropped fly ball and wild pitch in the inning.
- Belmont Abbey extended its lead to 6-1 thanks to an RBI groundout from Caleb Burr and and an RBI double from Risk.
- Golembe's single and ensuing SWU error helped the Crusaders add another run in the fifth.
- After SWU rallied with a four-run sixth inning, the Abbey added a pair of insurance runs starting with a Burr RBI double. He later scored on a SWU error.
- The Warriors had the bases loaded in the seventh but Carson Dahle was able to keep them off the board to close the game out.
- Cipro got the win after striking out five in six innings.

- Due to inclement weather in the forecast for Saturday, the series finale has been shifted to Monday.
- First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. from Abbey Yard.
