MARS HILL, N.C. -- Jeremy Mahoney scored three goals and added an assist and Belmont Abbey took control after an early deficit for a 14-6 victory over Mars Hill in men's lacrosse action Saturday.

The contest was the season opener for both teams.

HOW IT HAPPENED

• Mahoney converted three of his five shots on goal for a four-point contest. He took seven shots total, while grabbing four ground balls and causing two turnovers.
• Garrett Clare and Quinn Smith each tallied a pair of goals and an assist for three points, while Jacob Chandler also scored twice.
• Junior goalkeeper JR Tomei made 13 saves and grabbed nine ground balls in his debut as a Crusader.
• Clare added five ground balls with Alex Garcia grabbed four.
• Belmont Abbey out-shot the Lions 58-32 overall and 27-19 on goal. It also held a 41-32 advantage on ground balls.
•  After a 2-0 deficit in the first two minutes, The Abbey tied the score at 2 by the end of the first quarter and held a 7-4 lead at halftime. The final two quarters saw 4-1 and 3-1 margins for the final tally.
