BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey baseball team earned a series win against Coker in the first doubleheader of the season Saturday afternoon at Abbey Yard.
The Crusaders dropped the first game of the twin bill 5-4 before bouncing back for an 8-3 win in the rubber game of the series against the Cobras.
Joe Whitaker finished with a four-hit day, including a two-run home run in the opening game of the day to lead the Belmont Abbey offense.
Jackson Risk also finished with a four-hit day while
Matthew Fattore finished with three hits in the second game.
Ethan Wilson made his return to the lineup and earned the win in the second game of the day.
Belmont Abbey is now 2-1 on the season while Coker is now 1-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1
- Spencer Cipro got the start for Belmont Abbey and kept the Cobras off the board in the first two innings.
- Risk had a double in the second inning for Belmont Abbey's first hit of the day.
- Coker added runs in the second and fifth inning before RBI doubles from Whitaker and Connor Tucker tied the game in the fifth.
- The Cobras added a home run in the sixth and two more runs in the seventh to take a 5-2 lead.
- Whitaker hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh and Belmont Abbey got the bases loaded in the inning before Coker held on for the win.
- Cipro pitched a complete game and struck out six in seven innings of work.
GAME 2
- Belmont Abbey struck quickly in the first with RBI doubles from Matthew Fattore and Risk.
- After Coker got a run back in the third, Jake Bidoglio drove in his first run as a Crusader with an RBI double in the fourth.
- RBI singles from Justin Herrera and Jack Boyles extended the Abbey lead to 5-1 in the fifth and Caleb Burr drove in a run with an RBI double in the sixth.
- Ethan Wilson allowed just one run and three hits in his first appearance since 2023. He also had three strikeouts and no walks.
- Coker got within 6-3 with runs in the seventh and eighth innings but a Jackson Risk two-run single in the eighth helped Belmont Abbey seal the win.
- Brady Lencz pitched three innings in his Crusader debut while Thomas Paxton pitched a scoreless ninth to seal the win.

- The Crusaders continue their long February homestand with a contest against Mars Hill on Tuesday.
