Crusaders Battle with Wingate in Conference Road Contest

WINGATE, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey field hockey team was locked team in a close battle with Wingate Tuesday evening at Graham Gill Field.

The Crusaders and Bulldogs were scoreless until the fourth quarter when a Wingate goal with just over five minutes remaining proved to be the difference in a 1-0 defeat for the Abbey.

With Tuesday's results, Belmont Abbey is now 5-4 overall and 5-2 in South Atlantic Conference play. Wingate is also 5-4 overall and 3-3 in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Belmont Abbey took all four shots of the contest in the first half of the contest.
  • Jillian Cain had her shot on goal just over four minutes into the match.
  • Lily Willard had four saves in the match for the Abbey.
  • Wingate's goal came with just over five minutes remaining in the contest from Lauren Montgomery.
  • Belmont Abbey finished with four penalty corners.

  • The Crusaders head on the road to face Lincoln Memorial at 12:30 p.m. Saturday in Harrogate, Tennessee.
  • It will be the first of two meetings in four days with the Railsplitters with Saturday's contest being a conference contest.
