HARROGATE, Tenn. — Sarah Schumacher scored her team-leading sixth goal of the season with less than 30 seconds left in overtime as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team earned a 1-0 victory over Lincoln Memorial Saturday afternoon at the LMU Lacrosse Complex.
Schumacher got the goal as the first overtime period off an assist from Cecilia Müller to help the Crusaders win its sixth South Atlantic Conference game of the season.
The victory also officially clinches a conference tournament spot for Belmont Abbey.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 6-4 overall and 6-2 in conference play. Lincoln Memorial is now 4-8 overall and 1-5 in the league.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Müller helped lead the strong defensive effort in the first quarter as she made a pair of defensive saves in the first quarter.
- Isabel Stankiewicz took the first shot of the game for the Crusaders midway through the second quarter.
- Lily Willard made her lone save of the contest in the third quarter.
- Belmont Abbey took a total of three shots in regulation and six of its 10 penalty corners came in the fourth quarter and overtime.
- The Crusaders had four shots, all on goal, in overtime before Schumacher came through with the game-winner.
- Both teams finished with seven shots each.
- Saturday's win was the first victory in the regular overtime period since a 2-1 win over Limestone on November 2, 2022.
UP NEXT
- The Crusaders will face Lincoln Memorial for a second straight game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Alumni Field.
- The game will officially be counted as a nonconference contest.
