Crusaders Extend Win Streak to Five with Upset of No. 7 Lander

BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey field hockey team earned its fifth straight win and biggest in program history with a 3-2 upset victory over No. 7 Lander Friday night at Alumni Field. The contest marked the beginning of Homecoming weekend at the Abbey.

The win marks the second time in program history that the Crusaders have defeated a Top 10 opponent. The other win came in a 4-2 victory over No. 10 Newberry on October 20, 2023.

The Crusaders took just three shots on the evening but made the most of them with all three finding the back of the cage. Eileen Schwab, Hailey Leatherman and Nicki Jonkers all tallied goals for the Abbey while Lily Willard finished with eight saves.

With Friday's result, Belmont Abbey improves to 5-3 overall and 5-1 in South Atlantic Conference play. Lander is 6-2 overall and 3-2 in the league.
