BELMONT, N.C. — The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team returned to the pitch as the Crusaders hosted King in the final home match of the regular season Tuesday at Alumni Field.
Despite 16 shots, it was the Tornado who came away with the 1-0 win over the Crusaders.
It is the first loss for Belmont Abbey in the month of October as the Crusaders are now 5-4-6 and 3-3-6 in Conference Carolinas play. King is 5-6-4 overall and 4-5-3 in the league. The Crusaders closes out their Northwest Division schedule with a 1-2-5 record while King is 1-4-2 with one match remaining.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey had four shots in the first half as both teams were locked in a defensive battle early.
- Play began to open up in the second half as Sam Jordan and Samuel Atherton took the first two shots on goal for the Crusaders.
- Jordan led the team with four shots, two on target.
- The Crusaders would take three more shots but it was the Tornado that struck in the 70th minute for the lone goal of the match.
- Belmont Abbey finished with seven shots on target to go with seven corner kicks.
- Trent McConnaughey finished with four saves in goal for the Crusaders.
