BELMONT, N.C. — Hailey Leatherman scored her sixth goal of the season while
Lily Willard recorded her second shutout of the season as the Belmont Abbey field hockey team closed out the regular season home schedule with a 1-0 victory over Converse Tuesday at Alumni Field.
The game officially counts as a nonconference contest between the two South Atlantic Conference schools. The victory is the fourth straight win for the Abbey, all of them shutouts.
With Tuesday's results, the Crusaders are now 9-4 on the season while Converse is now 7-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Belmont Abbey got on the board with just over three minutes remaining in the first quarter when Leatherman scored off an assist from Jillian Cain.
- The goal came off a Crusader penalty corner, one of 14 for the contest.
- The Abbey took four shots in the second quarter, three on target.
- Belmont Abbey had eight penalty corners in the third quarter.
- Willard made two of her four saves in the fourth quarter, including one in the final two minutes of the contest to preserve the shutout.
- The Crusaders out-shot the Valkyries 12-8 for the contest including 8-4 in shots on goal.
- Belmont Abbey finishes the home slate with a 6-1 record during the regular season.
