BELMONT, N.C.— The Belmont Abbey men's soccer team used a flurry of goals in the second half as the Crusaders defeated Shaw 4-1 Saturday night at Alumni Field on Senior Night.
Nine seniors were honored on Senior Night in a pre-match ceremony:
Alek Bravo,
Bubby Towns,
Sam Jordan,
Darren Lawlor,
Olly Clifford,
Adam Hill,
Samuel Atherton,
Sam Reynolds and
Evan Galek.
Samuel Atherton and
Austin Ball each had a goal and assist in the win while
Sam Jordan also scored a goal in the win.
With Saturday's result, Belmont Abbey is now 5-3-4 overall while Shaw is 2-6-1 on the year. It was the final nonconference match of the season for the Crusaders.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Crusaders came out aggressive with five shots in the first 16 minutes of play.
- Trent McConnaughey made a diving save in the 19th minute for his lone save of the night.
- Belmont Abbey came out quick to start the second half with Jordan scoring in the opening minute to take a 1-0 lead.
- Shaw answered just three minutes later with a goal from Jesse Salas to pull even.
- Austin Ball contributed on the next two goals as the Abbey scored less than a minute apart.
- Ball put the Crusaders ahead for good in the 67th minute while Zac Birch got his first goal of the season less than a minute later off a Ball assist.
- Belmont Abbey capped the scoring with less than three minutes left in the match.
- The Crusaders finished with 22 shots on the night compared to seven for Shaw.
- Belmont Abbey also had four corner kicks, all coming in the first half.

- Belmont Abbey heads on the road to face Converse in a Northwest Division match at 7:30 p.m. in Spartanburg, S.C..
